When looking at most people’s blogs, like myself, they mostly use the internet to find news. I did see one person who said they like to read newspapers because it makes them feel older. That is an interesting concept. Now, reading a newspaper is a thing of the past that our generation does not do. It makes him feel older because he has only seen older people do it. Really, I cannot even remember the last time I saw someone under 25 read a newspaper, and the newsstands in Halls always seem to be missing people. Either way, I still think it makes since to have news online, that way, as soon as breaking news happens, the world knows instantly. Instead of having yesterday’s news printed in a paper, the internet has today’s news that happened one hour ago or sooner. Another similarity I saw in my classmates’ blogs was that they all seem to weigh each issue with different perspectives from different websites. They acknowledge that some papers are more right and some are more left, then more people even acknowledges that we might not be getting the full story from a U.S. perspective at all and look at the BBC. One person said that BBC was “unbiased,” but I think we need to be wary of saying that it is unbiased because every story has a bias, they just have different ones. So instead of just trusting the BBC, maybe we should still take their perspective into account with the others so that we can get that much closer to the truth of the story we are reading.
Quite frankly, I think Hedges would be shocked by all the news reading that we do. He claims that most of America is illiterate and makes bad decisions, but I think by using multiple news sites we prove him wrong. We are trying to make good decisions on opinions based on multiple sources. Carr may also put more faith into the internet for the same reasons. We explore topics further by looking at the topic from several different sources. Sullivan would probably agree with my position on news on the internet. It creates the snapshot in time that he talked about with blogging. Each news article records the time and date, and logs the events that are happening as they unfold. Therefore, online news is a benefit to our society.
